Being an IT Consultant taught me many things, but the most important thing is that you can be whatever you want to be if you work hard. It doesn’t matter where you come from, or where you started. If you can find the courage to be resilient through failures, you will get there. That is especially true in the IT industry where technology changes at the speed of light. You’ve got to be quick on your feet, or you’re out of the game. Technology like Salesforce is fast growing and its adopters are huge- from nimble startups to big enterprises!
My name is Joanna Knott, and this is my story. If you told me 10 years ago I would be a Salesforce Solution Architect I would laugh at you, and I would laugh hard. At university, I majored in economics and trade, and have had no formal training in Computer Science or IT. My career in America began as a receptionist in a financial services firm. I spent some time as an analyst at a Telecom startup before I discovered my passion for Salesforce. Today, I can honestly say I love what I do and all of the challenges that come with it.
My path into tech hasn’t been traditional, nor easy, but I am proud to share my journey with you. During the last 19 years, I have been very fortunate to work with colleagues and managers who helped provide challenging opportunities to grow. I am grateful for each leader who was thoughtful enough to coach confidence and courage at the core of our interactions. I will forever be grateful for the people who encouraged me to take on big projects and helped me make the industry changes that have landed me in my dream job. Nowadays, I look for opportunities to pay it forward whenever possible.
It doesn’t matter what nationality, gender, or age you are, believe in yourself. I cannot say that enough. Cultivate the courage to grow and foster a curious mind. Ask the hard questions and challenge the status quo. Take on the project you don’t yet have the skills for, that’s how you grow. I promise technology isn’t as scary as it seems to be.
And finally, my advice is to share. Share your interest in new technology or new business functions. Most of us have no idea what we are doing when we first get started. You’re definitely not alone in that. There are so many people out there, like me, who are looking for opportunities to help people achieve their dreams. It’s as easy as asking someone to teach you about what they do. Your journey into the tech world will be challenging but don’t give up on yourself, you can accomplish great success if you have resilience.
